Life in Tokyo, a website for foreign residents in Tokyo, creates videos to help those who have just moved to Tokyo adjust to their new lives. These videos are broadcast with subtitles in two languages: Japanese and English.
The videos are based on Life in Tokyo: Your Guide, a booklet published by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Citizens and Cultural Affairs which provides useful information to foreign nationals beginning life in Tokyo for the first time. 2 – 3 minutes in length, the videos feature a British man who works at a Japanese company in Tokyo, and present information from the booklet in a highly accessible format.
The Life in Tokyo: Your Guide video series started in November 2018. 2 new videos are being uploaded each month; as of March 1, 2019, a total of 8 videos are available to view. The topics featured so far include “Register your address in Japan at the city office” and “Working in Japan: Salary deductions & insurance”, procedures and systems that foreign nationals often struggle to get to grips with, as well as useful information for daily life, like “Introduction to train travel around Tokyo” and “Riding a bicycle: Rules of the road in Japan”. Videos on a range of other useful topics are set to be released this year, providing information on things such as neighborhood associations, earthquake preparedness, and rules and manners for when renting homes. By fall 2019, a total of 24 videos will be available online.
※The videos can been viewed on the following website.
