“The Keep of Edo Castle” TNM & TOPPAN Museum Theater, Tokyo National Museum

The keep of Edo Castle once dominated the Edo skyline. “The Keep of Edo Castle,” now showing at the TNM & TOPPAN Museum Theater, located in Tokyo National Museum’s Toyokan (Asian Gallery) B1F, is a VR (virtual reality) program which uses VR technology to recreate the keep of Edo Castle as it was back then along with the processes behind its construction.

This program recreates the last keep of Edo Castle, built by the third Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. This keep, said to have been one of the largest in Japan’s history, was constructed using the most advanced building techniques of the day and a tremendous amount of financial power. However, it burned down in a major fire in 1657, having existed for a mere 19 years. This VR program uses clues gained from designs and drawings along with cultural assets and traditional techniques that survive to this day to bring this illusive castle keep back to life. The end of the program also features a 3D video which reconstructs the keep of Edo Castle among the skyscrapers of modern Tokyo. Witness the keep standing amid the scenery of Tokyo as if it never burned down and survived through to the present day.

In addition, other events using AR (augmented reality) will be held simultaneously for the duration of the program’s screening. If you download a special AR application onto a smartphone and hold it up to Tokyo National Museum’s Honkan (main building), a full scale Edo Castle, with a height of around 59 m, over twice as high as the museum building, will appear on the screen. Try it and marvel at the scale of this huge keep proclaiming the power of the Tokugawa shogunate!
