Just five years remain until the holding of Tokyo's Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020. In that there are demands for Japan to heighten its ability to offer "Omotenashi" when welcoming foreign visitors, as a first step in such a process, it is necessary that current foreign residents and their Japanese hosts work together to respect each other’s diversity, and while doing so share a common identity and vision that can overcome differences.

This year, in that it shall be held for the first time, the "Multicultural One Family Festival" shall aim to be an event that strengthens cooperative networks, both among foreign residents and Japanese; and among foreign residents themselves; it thus helping to improve the offering of “Omotenashi”. The festival will kick off with the multicultural forum held at Tokyo Women’s Plaza on Saturday, August 1st. This will be followed by events held in the vicinity of Hibiya Park’s fountain open space on Saturday and Sunday, August 15th and 16th; where visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of ethnic cuisine, cultural exhibits organized by various embassies and even multicultural karaoke, etc., performed on a specially-prepared mini stage. On Sunday the 16th as well, at Hibiya Park’s small open-air concert hall, there will be wonderful multicultural performances given by various Japanese and foreign resident community groups.

Through participation by people possessing multicultural backgrounds in this festival, it is strongly hoped that visitors will seek to have contact both with cultures of different countries and with culture that exceeds national borders. There are more than two million foreign residents currently living in Japan, and with each year the roles they play within society become more important. If Japan’s foreign residents and their Japanese hosts can become “one family”, then the nation’s ability to offer "Omotenashi" should further improve!
