The United Nations (UN) plays a major role in maintaining world peace and stability. As part of activities undertaken to further such causes, the Tokyo Prefectural Chapter of the United Nations Association of Japan holds events. These events are part of the "National Junior High School Student Composition Contest for International Understanding and Cooperation" and the "National Senior High School Student Speech Competition for International Understanding and Cooperation."

This year there are the following three topics for the Junior High School Student Composition Contest: "If I was UN Secretary General, what do I believe the UN should do?"; "For world peace and prosperity, what important actions should the UN undertake?"; and "Considering the lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake, what role should Japan play in the UN?" Contestants shall be asked to select one of the topics, and to summarize their opinions in four written pages or less of 400-character manuscript paper. Entries must be sent so that they are received by Friday, September 5th. Of the compositions received as entries, 20 shall be selected to receive prizes. Furthermore, two entries shall be nominated for special prizes and recommended to the Central Examination Committee (the National Event).

For the Senior High School Student Speech Competition this year, the three topics are as follows: "If I was UN Secretary General, what do I believe the UN should do?"; "How should Japan and the UN cooperate in order to realize societies in which women can excel?"; and "Based on the proactive pacifism proposed by its government, how should Japan involve itself in UN activities?" For the speech competition, contestants shall express their opinions in the form of a speech made from a podium. They are asked to prepare a draft speech of six minutes duration or less on their selected topic. Entries must be sent so that they are received by Thursday, September 11th. The actual speeches shall be delivered at the Tokyo Event held at the JICA Global Plaza's International Conference Hall on Tuesday, September 23rd. (a national holiday). The two contestants who win special prizes shall also have an opportunity to represent Tokyo at the Central Event (the National Event) to be held at the United Nations University on Monday, October 20th.

Globally, there are numerous issues such as conflict resolution, poverty reduction, human rights and environmental problems, etc., that each country must cooperate on if they are to be resolved. Thus, the role that the UN should be playing continues to increase in size. To all junior and senior high school students, based on what you have learned at school, what you have experienced in everyday life, or what you have felt in response to newspaper and TV news, please give us your opinions on the role of the UN and international cooperation. We look forward to receiving entries bursting with a sense of passion! (Entries shall be limited to those written in Japanese)
