In the current season where upon a daily basis there exists an ever-growing sense of the onset of spring, wouldn't you enjoy refreshing yourself while surrounded by nature, of freely stretching out a body that has been kept huddled away from winter's cold? It is assumed that many people are experiencing the urge "to venture out on hiking and mountaineering expeditions." Thus, in this month's One Point we introduce the "Sunday Hike" events of FoE Japan, an international environmental NGO!

FoE Japan is an international environmental NGO that addresses environmental issues on a global scale. As a member organization of the global "Friends of the Earth International" network that enjoys the support of some 2,000,000 people across 77 countries, FoE Japan was founded in 1980. In establishing a vision of realizing a "sustainable society" where all life on the planet is in harmony and all may live a rich life, FoE Japan engages in a wide range of activities related to climate change & energy, forestry preservation, desert greenification, development finance, waste & recycling, and sustainable urban development, etc.

FoE Japan runs "Sunday Hike" events that anybody can easily join and enjoy. While offering the experience of weekend hiking in the Kanto region, these events allow participants the opportunity to think about environmental-preservation issues. At each "Sunday Hike" event, volunteer hike leaders are on hand to show the way. Thus, even novice hikers can participate with peace-of-mind. Moreover, there are also many foreign participants. This means that while enjoying the grandeur of nature, participants can experience the fun of international exchanges! In March, "Sunday Hike" destinations will include Ashigaratoge in Hakone, the Miura Alps, and the mountains around Takao and Tanzawa, etc. On the FoE Japan website, there are five competency levels offered that take into consideration course undulation and hiking distances. Thus, it is possible to select destinations that are in accordance with your fitness and experience levels.
