As the year 2012 comes towards its end, calendars for the next year as well as Christmas and New Year holiday cards have started to appear at many stores. Some non-governmental organizations working for international cooperation, including the Japan International Volunteer Center (JVC), also issue their own calendars for raising funds that would support their activities to help people around the world. If you are looking for a calendar for 2013 and would also like to make contribution to the global cooperation efforts, consider JVC's "International Cooperation Calendar."

JVC started making the International Cooperation Calendar as a fundraiser 25 years ago. In addition to the high quality of photographs taken by leading photographers, its practical design that includes plenty of note-taking spaces and "moon phase" marks have made this a very popular calendar, selling over 20,000 copies each year. For the 2013 calendar, JVC has set the theme to "Singing to the earth" and features photos by photojournalist Hiromi Nagakura, who has captured various expressions of children around the world.

The profit from the sale of the JVC calendars is used to support JVC's community assistance activities in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East as well as for the continuing recovery effort in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. For example, purchasing five copies of the calendar (about 5,000 yen) would support one HIV positive South African to learn vegetable farming so as to support himself, and buying six copies (about 6,000 yen) would enable a one-day community salon event to support the earthquake victims in Miyagi and Fukushima who are still having to live away from home in temporary housing. This is a simple yet great way to become part of the international cooperation effort and to send a nice holiday gift to friends, families, or yourself at the same time.

JVC has also prepared a set of six postcards that use the photographs from the calendar showing lively expressions and daily lifestyles of children in Micronesia, Afghanistan, South Africa, etc. Also available is a set of JVC Smile New Year Postcards, which use pictures drawn by children in communities that JVC supports. By sending holiday greetings with these postcards, you may be helping people around you to become aware of the needs of global support and cooperation. The calendars and postcards are available for purchase from the JVC website.
