Environmental Volunteering Fair 2012

In 1992, a 12-year old girl from Canada named Severn Suzuki made a famous speech at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development Convention ("Earth Summit") in Rio de Janeiro, in which she expressed her deep concerns about the destruction of environment and pleaded to the world, saying: "if you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it." Last month, 20 years after Suzuki's speech that moved people around the world, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development ("Rio+20") was held also in Rio de Janeiro. The conference, however, revealed the reality that the progress towards the preservation of the global environment has been slower than was hoped for 20 years ago.

This makes us realize again how important it is today for each of us to keep doing what we can do to improve the situations for the global environment. If you are interested in volunteering for environmental activities and are searching for an opportunity to work for the earth and our future, the upcoming Environmental Volunteering Fair 2012 is a great occasion in which to find a project that fits your interest. The fair is held on July 14 (Sat.) and expects the participation of over 30 environmental organizations and activity groups. The admission is free, and visitors can join a variety of events without advance reservations anytime during the fair.

Environmental volunteering deals with various issues from various approaches. Preventing global warming, preserving biological diversity, and recycling resources are just a few examples of such issues. The Environmental Volunteer Fair is designed to connect those who are interested in environmental volunteering but don't know where to start or want to know who is doing what to the active environmental organizations. At each presentation booth of the participating organizations, visitors can directly speak to their members and ask questions about their projects and volunteering opportunities, which are available in a variety of types from field work to home-based office work to event management assistance. A number of events and workshops will be held at the fair, including a craft-making using natural materials and fun games. Whether you are ready to become a volunteer or are still trying to decide, the fair makes a great source of hands-on information for potential environmental volunteers.
