We listed telephone numbers for if you need to call for help immediately. Please remember these numbers just in case you ever encounter an emergency. For your convenience, we recommend that you carry a list of these numbers.

If you have a sudden illness or major injury

Call 119!!

119 is the telephone number that connects to the public office in charge of emergencies (providing medical treatment for sudden illness and injury). You can call for an ambulance (vehicle that carries ill or injured people).
If you have a sudden illness or major injury, call 119 and request an ambulance.
When you call 119 in Tokyo, it connects to the Command and Control Center of the Tokyo Fire Department. There are operators who speak English. You can also use an interpretation service in English, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

Information to provide on the telephone

When you call 119, the operator on the telephone will ask if you are calling about a fire or an emergency. Please remain calm and provide the following information without hurrying.

  • Request an ambulance
  • Provide the address where the ambulance should come
  • Condition of illness or injury
  • Your name and telephone number

It doesn’t cost any money to call an ambulance in Japan.

If you are unsure of whether to call an ambulance

The only time when you should call an ambulance is when you are unable to move.
If you have a slight illness or injury, you should go to the hospital by your own car or a taxi.
If you cannot decide whether to go the hospital immediately or to call an ambulance, call #7119 to talk with the Emergency Telephone Consultation Center. Please note that operators at the Emergency Telephone Consultation Center do not speak foreign languages.

In case of fire

Call 119!!

119 is the telephone number to call the public office in charge of extinguishing fires (putting out fires). You can call a fire engine (a vehicle for putting out fires).
If you discover a fire, please use a loud voice to warn the nearby people and then call 119 to request a fire engine.
When you call 119 in Tokyo, it connects to the Command and Control Center of the Tokyo Fire Department. There are operators who speak English. You can also use an interpretation service in English, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

  • Provide the address where the fire engine should come
  • Describe that what is burning
  • Your name and a phone number

After you call a fire engine, please wait in a safe place.

If you are involved in a crime or accident

Call 110!!

110 is the telephone number for calling the police.
If you have been robbed or if you have a traffic accident, please call 110 for the police.
When you call 110 in Tokyo, it connects to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.
There are English-speaking staff at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department.

When you call 110, an operator on the telephone will ask you the following questions. Please remain calm and provide the following information without hurrying.

  • What happened?
  • What was the time and location of the incident?
  • What is the situation now?
  • Where is the criminal?
  • Your name and a phone number

If somebody is injured, please inform the operator. An ambulance will come with the police.

If you are experiencing trouble

110 is the telephone number for when you want the police to come immediately.
If you want to consult the police regarding concerns and troubles that you are experiencing, please call #9110 and consult the General Advisory Center of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Support is available in both Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean.
