Let’s Learn Japanese in a Relaxed and Enjoyable Fashion!

This spring, Sung-Bum arrived at a Japanese high school as an exchange student. At a café, he strikes up a conversation with Cynthia, the girlfriend of his host brother.

Let’s Learn Japanese in a Relaxed and Enjoyable Fashion!

Sung-Bum

Summer vacation is almost here.

Cynthia

That’s right, it will be your first since arriving in Japan. How do you intend to pass the time?

Sung-Bum

I’m going to apply myself to my Japanese language studies! Like you have done, at some time in the future I would like to go on and study at a Japanese university. However, for that to happen I really need to improve my language skills!

Cynthia

Really? Well you seem to be sufficiently motivated.

Sung-Bum

Yes, I am! By the way, do you know of any Japanese textbooks that you could recommend to me?

Cynthia

Textbooks are no doubt very good, however, have you ever tried websites to study Japanese? There are lots of free-to-use materials that make learning enjoyable.

Sung-Bum

Really! Please tell me about them!

Cynthia

You’re in luck, because I happen to have my laptop with me. As such, I can introduce some of them to you. With this site for example, from the setting of the conversations which is a bit like a school drama, things are arranged so that you can learn the language necessary to live here in Japan. As to what is good about the learning materials available on this site, it is possible to play back the voices of the characters again and again. Even if there are words that are hard to pick up, by looking at the subtitles and listening to the voices repeatedly, sooner or later you can remember the phrases.

Sung-Bum

I see that the main character in the materials is an exchange student like myself! I get the impression that I could pick up many expressions that would come in handy during the course of my day-to-day life.

Cynthia

And here’s another one, this is a site where you can learn Japanese through anime and manga.

Sung-Bum

So you can read manga while studying? That sounds ideal for a manga fan like me! Moreover, you can listen to the dialog of the characters as well! I could study for hours with something like this!

Sung-Bum seems to have become very interested in the advice that Cynthia has offered.

Sung-Bum

There does seem to be a great variety of different learning materials available. How did you go about actually finding Japanese language study sites like these?

Cynthia

Well there is actually a portal site that collates and introduces websites and tools that may prove handy in the studying of Japanese. Based on categories such as “reading,“ “writing,” “kanji,” “grammar” and “vocabulary,” etc., or based on the level of your Japanese ability, you can search out websites and tools that match your own needs. The portal site is really quite convenient.

Sung-Bum

Looking at what you have shown me, it seems that there are a great number of websites and tools being introduced on this portal. I could become very interested in trying out any number of them.

Cynthia

Talking to you, I remember my own experiences soon after arriving in Japan. While it is no doubt important to thoroughly study over the course of the long summer vacation, however, with your friends and your host family, don’t forget to also enjoy what a Japanese summer has to offer. I say that because you only get to have one summer as a 16 year-old.

Sung-Bum

Thank you very much Cynthia. If I have any other queries, I hope you will give me your advice.
