Let’s have a Barbecue!

Giuseppe has come from Italy to work at his company’s Japanese subsidiary. On a Monday following a holiday break, he strikes up a conversation with Kenichi, a work colleague.

Let’s have a Barbecue!

Kenichi

The rainy season has ended and high summer is just about here! The season in which leisure activities can be enjoyed has arrived. This last weekend I experienced a wonderful barbeque with some friends.

Giuseppe

I feel rather jealous. Back in Italy during the summer months, I enjoyed holding barbeques regularly in the garden of our home. However, since arriving in Japan I haven’t been able to do such things because we now live in a condominium. This development has caused some disappointment in my family.

Kenichi

If that is the case, how about utilizing the metropolitan parks where having barbecues is permitted? The garden of my own home is rather small; thus, when we want to hold a barbecue, we simply use a park or a camping ground.

Giuseppe

Are there any locations you would recommend?

Kenichi

This website, lists the metropolitan parks where barbeques can be held. They include Shiokaze Park which offers views of Tokyo Bay and the Rainbow Bridge, and Kasai Rinkai Park where visitors can also enjoy an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. If you want to experience relaxing and wide-open spaces, I would recommend Koganei Park. There are even parks where you can enjoy a barbeque empty-handed because they have the cooking equipment and foodstuffs available at the park.

Giuseppe

Really? That’s a great help for families with small children because it can be a real hassle to set out on a family expedition while carrying a great amount of stuff.

Kenichi

However, I should warn you that certain locations require advanced bookings. In that such facilities can be very crowded especially at weekends, I would recommend that bookings be made as early as possible.

It seems Giuseppe is also interested in getting out and exploring areas outside the metropolitan area.

Giuseppe

I also like having barbeques near the sea, in the mountains and along rivers. Are there any natural settings where barbeques can be enjoyed that are within easy reach of the downtown area?

Kenichi

Even in Tokyo, if you head to the city’s western areas you can find camping grounds where natural surroundings can be enjoyed. It is great to have a barbeque while surrounded by beautiful greenery and running water. However…

Giuseppe

However?

Kenichi

Unfortunately some people don’t observe good manners in such locations. They have barbeques in areas where barbeques are prohibited, or they become intoxicated and cause inconvenience to surrounding people. Some don’t bother to carry their trash or barbeque ashes home with them, rather they decide to dig a hole and bury the lot. Others even resort to washing their eating implements in the river!

Giuseppe

Really? That’s totally unacceptable. If you are going to enjoy the great outdoors, you shouldn’t pollute the environment and you should also be considerate of other people around you!

Kenichi

My views exactly.

Giuseppe

Kenichi-san, what about organizing to have a barbeque together in the future? I could also introduce my family to you.

Kenichi

That sounds a great idea. I could also bring along some friends.

Giuseppe

It would give me an opportunity to introduce Italian-style barbeque cuisine to everyone, please look forward to it!
