How to Get Rid of Oversized Refuse?

Mustapha runs a Moroccan restaurant in Japan. Just before he opens for business, his friend Makoto drops by.

Mustapha

Hello Makoto, you are very welcome!

Makoto

Good evening Mustapha. I'm a little bit early, can I come in?

Mustapha

Please do by all means. I have finished my preparations, so please come in. Actually, thinking about it, I have something to ask you. Could you spare me a couple of minutes?

Makoto

(Laughing) By all means. I hope it's something I know about.

Mustapha

Well currently, I am re-decorating one of the rooms in my house. You know what I mean, with spring upon us, I feel like a bit of a change.

Makoto

Uh-huh.

Mustapha

And I want to get rid of my sofa and chest of drawers. However, how should I go about it? Should I put it out on a day when they collect combustible refuse, or should it go out on a day when non-combustible refuse is collected. I don't know what to do.

Makoto

Well large refuse such as furniture and bedding, etc., is commonly referred to as "oversized refuse." It shouldn't be put out on the days when normal refuse is collected. Before you put it out, you should contact the oversized refuse collection center in your municipality and ask them to come and pick it up.

Mustapha

Really? I had no idea.

Makoto

Furthermore, there is a service charge levied for the processing of oversized refuse. To get somebody to come and pick up such items, you have to purchase oversized refuse processing stickers and attach them to the items that you want taken away.

Mustapha

So we have to pay money if we want to throw such items out?

Makoto

Yes, the service charges levied vary depending on the type and size of the items that you want to discard. To find out how many processing stickers you require and their cost, either call the oversized refuse collection center in your municipality, or look up the information on the Internet.

Mustapha

And where can I get oversized refuse processing stickers?

Makoto

They are sold at a number of locations including convenience stores, etc. When buying them, make sure that you purchase those for the municipality in which you live. Next, on the morning that the items are to be collected, affix the processing stickers and make sure to place the oversized refuse either outside the front door of your home or in front of the apartment block where you live.

Mustapha

I see.

Makoto

To find out more about oversized refuse, ward and city government homepages offer detailed information including how to contact the oversized refuse collection centers. Please check these sources if there is something that you don't know about.

It seems that Mustapha also wants to find out if there are any other ways to dispose of oversized refuse.

Mustapha

So the only option is for somebody to come and pick up your oversized refuse?

Makoto

It depends on the municipality. There are some that have defined locations where you can take your oversized refuse yourself. If available, this is a good option in that it is cheaper than paying for somebody to come and pick it up.

Mustapha

Yes. I had no idea that it would cost money to get rid of furniture. If that is the case, rather than buying a replacement chest of drawers, I might try and repaint the ones I already have. Then again, my sofa is in a pretty bad state. As such, I don't see any other option than to dispose of it. If it's possible to drop it off at a designated location, I suppose I need to start looking for somebody to give me a hand….

Makoto

Mustapha, would it be possible for me to order my meal?

Mustapha

Oh! Sorry to have kept you waiting. As a thank you for everything you have told me, today the mint tea is on the house.
