Let's enjoy Tokyo by marathon!

Tim's hobby is to go running. He finds out Kanako, his coworker, is participating in the marathon and decides to talk to her.

Tim

I heard that marathons are really taking off in Japan within the last few years, is this true?

Kanako

Yeah, I'd say there's an unprecedented marathon boom. Among all of them, the Tokyo Marathon is a very popular event held in February. This year it will be on February 24th.

Tim

What's the scale of the competition?

Kanako

There are 36,000 people participating, ranging from top runners from inside and outside the country to local runners. Because there are a lot of applicants, it's hard to win the lottery for entry. I was lucky to be able to participate last year. We started at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, and enjoyed circling the Imperial Palace as well as Asakusa. I was cheered on by people lining the course, and I was about to cry when I reached the goal.

Tim

It's like taking a tour of Tokyo while you're running. I'm so envious of your experience!

Kanako

They also held sub-events to create a buzz around the Tokyo Marathon. There was a "International Friendship Run" to let us meet foreign runners the day before the marathon, and a "Family Run" was held on the day of the race for children and their parents.

Tim

I see, that also sounds fun. I'll also try applying to the Tokyo marathon next year.

Tim asks Kanako about her training.

Tim

How do you train? I go running in my neighborhood park in the mornings.

Kanako

I'm a member of a running club, so I go running with them on the weekends, and afterwards we enjoy eating out together. Groups like this have been increasing lately, and there are a lot of members from overseas.

Tim

That's true. If you have close teammates it'll be fun to continue training!

Kanako

Yeah, as the English proverb goes, "the more the merrier!" which reminds me, this weekend we're planning on running around the Imperial Palace. Why don't you join us?

Tim

Of course, I'd be happy to! I'm looking forward to it!
